From Russia to Spain by car

How to get from Russia to Spain by car?
There are two ways to transport a car from Russia to Spain: by car carrier and on your own.

In this article, we will show you the best route if you decide to get there on your own. We do this ourselves from time to time and recommend it to our friends and clients.

So, let's go!
Road on water
If you are coming from St. Petersburg, then the best route, in our experience, is via Finland and then by ferry to Sweden or Germany.

Why do we recommend the water route? To save energy and not drive an extra day. The ferry is comfortable and does not take much longer. The cost of the ferry is partially offset by savings on gasoline and overnight stays.

Which ferry to choose?
There are several options:

Turku - Stockholm. Fast, comfortable and relatively inexpensive overnight ferry. With great breakfasts and dinners, several bars, restaurants and a bunch of slot machines. If you travel in the summer, then also with the most beautiful views of the bays and skerries.

Helsinki - Rostock or Lübeck. This ferry is convenient because it arrives in Germany, and there are perfect autobahns - you can cross the entire country in one go. This ferry is more of a cargo and passenger ferry, there are a lot of trucks and drivers, a couple of bars and a small store on board. There is a sauna. You won't have time to get bored in two nights and a day. There is nothing to admire - the Baltic Sea will be all around.

What's on the border?
The Finns have it as usual. If you have a residence permit, no problem. But with a tourist visa you can only return to Russia. Our border guards inspect thoroughly, as always, but the length of the inspection is compensated by the lack of a queue.

If you do not have a residence permit.

If you do not have a residence permit, but have a Schengen, then you can leave through the Norwegian border - through Kirkenes. Then the route through Norway to the south. If you choose this route, then allow for an extra 3 days.
General recommendations
As a rule, you can drive about 800 km in one day. More is already difficult. Along the entire route, you can find hotels of any star rating and an endless number of campsites. The food in roadside cafes is quite tolerable, and if you leave the highway, you can find decent restaurants and supermarkets.

It is not necessary to book accommodation in advance, plans can change, but it is worth breaking the road into sections to have several backup options.

The road passes through beautiful places and famous cities. Set aside a couple of days for Paris and San Sebastian, ride along the serpentines of the Pyrenees.
Insurance
For the trip you will need insurance for yourself and the car. It is not possible to get it in Russia. You can try to do it through the “helper” at the border, but it is better and safer to write to us, we will arrange everything and send you an electronic version.
Overland route
If you are closer to Georgia than to Finland, and you do not have a European residence permit, then you can choose the route: Georgia - Turkey - Bulgaria/Greece - Spain

A completely viable option, but quite long: allow at least a week.

Through Lithuania.

Vinsky's forum describes routes through Lithuania. You won't be able to get through with a tourist visa, but you can get through with a residence permit from any EU country. A D visa is also suitable for entry.

There is another easy way. Trust us with the transportation of your car. We will quickly and carefully transport your car to Spain or another European country. All you have to do is buy plane tickets for yourself. For example, from Helsinki.
