Family relocation or transporting an unflappable Bernese Mountain Dog!

Background
In August 2024, a regular customer approached us with an unusual request: help with a move.
It seemed like a simple request at first glance, but... He needed to move not only furniture and other belongings, but also a dog.
A dog of no ordinary kind—a Bernese Mountain Dog!
We had to prepare this imperturbable giant, 70 cm tall and weighing 80 kg, for the journey.
How does it happen?
Upon meeting her, we quickly realized she was a full-fledged member of the family, with the same composure as her owners and a peaceful nature.

We gathered the necessary information about transporting such large breeds, contacted a veterinary clinic, and began preparations.
The European Union has fairly strict regulations for transporting pets.
Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines or confiscation of the pet. The risks are serious, and we must take every precaution to avoid them during the journey.

So, when moving, your pet must have the following documents:
1. Identification chip.
2. Rabies vaccine.
The vaccination date must not be earlier than the date the chip or tattoo was inserted. No later than 21 days before the trip.
3. Identification document (veterinary passport).
The transportation process
The trip was a long one, spanning four countries. There was a lot to consider and pack.
To ensure the owners didn't find the preparation a nightmare and a tangle of paperwork, we took on some of the work ourselves.
Preparing the car was another step in the big trip.
Of all the possible options for transporting a dog in the car (carrier, safety barriers, hammock), we chose a hammock with a leash.
The hammock fits between the front and rear seats. It creates a comfortable space for the dog—it has half the car to itself, preventing it from crawling between the seats and disturbing the driver, and protecting the seats from hair, drool, and claws.
We stocked up on collapsible bowls, clean water, soft food, dry treats, disposable diapers, and a pet first aid kit.
We also took a leash, collar, and muzzle. We chose a route with nearby veterinary clinics, in case we needed assistance along the way.
It's worth noting that it took us two months to prepare (our first experience).
The finale
Finally, the car and dog were ready for the move, the luggage was in the cargo compartment, and we set off.
In accordance with the same Pet Transportation Rules, the car journey should not exceed 8 hours.
Every 2 hours, a walk, water, or food is also scheduled.
We drove with stops, enjoying the autumn scenery.
We arrived on schedule, without any incidents.
Overall, the dog handled the move well and happily ran to her family members, who were waiting for her at her new home.
